South Bronx Community Charter High School
South Bronx Community Charter High School (SBC) is a forward-thinking charter high school serving students in the South Bronx. Grounded in a competency-based model, the school goes beyond traditional academics by equipping students with critical thinking, leadership, and real-world skills that prepare them for college, careers, and life beyond the classroom.
At the heart of SBC’s work is a deep commitment to equity and inclusion. Serving a diverse, multi-racial, and multi-lingual student population, the school fosters a learning environment where every student is seen, heard, and valued. Their approach is grounded in the belief that all students—regardless of background, identity, or ability—deserve access to a supportive, responsive education that promotes both academic achievement and social-emotional growth.
Despite the strength of its programs and impact, SBC’s website did not fully reflect the depth of its work. The existing site provided basic information but lacked the storytelling, structure, and flexibility needed to showcase the school’s unique approach, highlight student experiences, and keep content fresh and engaging for families and the broader community. At Design TLC, we looked forward to improving their website to help share their message.
Objective
The goal of the website redesign was to create a dynamic, engaging digital presence that authentically represents SBC’s mission, values, and community impact.
This included:
- Bringing the school’s mission, vision, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion to life through intentional storytelling and content structure
- Creating a platform that reflects the school’s role as a community anchor, supporting students, families, and partners
- Developing a flexible system for ongoing updates, including news, events, and student achievements
Improving access to essential resources for families, including governance and key school information - Strengthening connections to social media and community engagement efforts
- Highlighting important milestones, including the school’s 10-year anniversary
Ultimately, the new site needed to move beyond static information – serving as a living, evolving platform that reflects the inclusivity, energy, and transformative impact of South Bronx Community Charter High School.
Approach
Discovery & Strategy
Through close collaboration with the SBC team, we identified what makes the school truly unique—its competency-based model, commitment to equity, and focus on real-world learning. At the same time, we uncovered key gaps in how those stories were being shared online.
This phase ensured the new site would be grounded in SBC’s mission and built to better serve its community.
Content & Storytelling
SBC has a powerful story and our goal was to bring it forward.
We restructured content to highlight the student experience, including internships, college coursework, and project-based learning, while elevating the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
We also created a framework for ongoing updates, making it easy to share news, events, and achievements.
User Experience
We streamlined the site architecture to improve navigation, making it easier for families to find essential information and for prospective students to explore what makes SBC different. Key resources, updates, and announcements are now more visible and easier to access.
Design & Development
The new design builds on SBC’s brand while adding energy and flexibility. We created a clean, responsive site that reflects the vibrancy of the school community and supports visual storytelling. A custom homepage animation was introduced to create a more engaging first impression—bringing movement and personality to the experience while reinforcing SBC’s forward-thinking approach.
Outcome
The result is a dynamic website that better reflects the heart of South Bronx Community Charter High School.
