The Clothesline

The Clothesline is a nonprofit organization focused on providing free, high-quality clothing to low-income school-aged children. Their mission is to collect gently used clothing from the community and distribute it in a welcoming retail environment, ensuring children feel confident and comfortable in the classroom.
Objective
The primary goal of the project was to enhance the website to improve user navigation, make the design more visually appealing, and provide better accessibility. Key objectives included:
- User-Friendly Navigation: Simplify the structure and make it easier for users to find what they need.
- Accessible Design: Improve color contrast and visual clarity to meet accessibility standards.
- Dynamic Imagery and Information: Feature vibrant images and better storytelling on the home page to engage visitors and convey the mission of The Clothesline more effectively.
- Multilingual Support: Ensure the Spanish-translated pages were accurate and consistent with the English pages.
- Backend Cleanup: Streamline the website’s backend to make it easier for the team to manage content and updates.
Approach
The client had a clear vision for the website’s look and feel, which led to multiple rounds of revisions to ensure the design perfectly aligned with their expectations. The redesign focused on improving navigation and layout, making it more intuitive for users. This allowed visitors to easily access key information such as donation details, services offered, and volunteer opportunities. The site now features accessible color choices and enhanced image contrast, while the home page was revamped with dynamic imagery that highlights The Clothesline’s mission, engaging visitors in the cause. The final design, along with the streamlined user experience, reflects the heart of the organization, and backend improvements ensure smooth and efficient content management.
To add personality and visual interest, the website incorporates whimsical, animated bird icons and clothespins, symbolizing the organization’s clothing-focused mission. These playful design elements reinforce the cause while making the site more engaging. Multiple design iterations were reviewed with the client to ensure the final product felt authentic and aligned with their vision. Additionally, ensuring multilingual consistency between the Spanish and English pages posed a challenge, as it required careful attention to detail to maintain design and content accuracy. Implementing accessible color schemes and enhancing site usability further ensured that the website is inclusive for all visitors.
Outcome
The Clothesline now has a website that is not only visually appealing but also functional and accessible. The design resonates with their mission, and the backend improvements make the site easier to manage. The team is thrilled with the outcome, as it effectively communicates their values and helps them reach more people in the community.
