Safe Routes Partnership
Safe Routes Partnership is a national nonprofit organization leading the movement to make walking, biking, and rolling safer and more accessible for everyone. Through advocacy, education, and collaboration with national and local partners, Safe Routes Partnership promotes policies and programs that support active transportation, safer streets, and healthier communities. Their previous website, built nearly two decades ago on Drupal, had become outdated and increasingly difficult to maintain. Design TLC partnered with Safe Routes Partnership to design and develop a new WordPress website that delivers a modern, accessible, and secure digital home for their growing content library and community initiatives.
Objective
As a national organization producing hundreds of resources, blogs, and webinars, Safe Routes Partnership needed a website that reflected their professionalism, simplified content management, and supported long-term sustainability.
Design TLC was tasked with creating a new website that:
- Replaced an outdated, insecure Drupal site with a modern, stable WordPress platform.
- Streamlined thousands of resources and blog posts for easier navigation and discovery.
- Improved accessibility and search optimization to increase visibility and user trust.
- Simplified content management for staff, reducing time spent maintaining two systems.
- Reflected Safe Routes Partnership’s mission of advancing safe, healthy, and equitable communities.
Approach
Discovery & Strategy
- We collaborated with the Safe Routes Partnership team to assess their current site’s challenges and define success for the new build. Through audits and planning, we identified key priorities: security, usability, accessibility, and long-term maintainability.
- Reviewed the full Drupal content structure and identified broken, duplicate, and outdated links.
- Outlined a new taxonomy system to unify 400+ tags and improve filtering.
- Developed a migration plan for ~1,600 resources and ~1,200 blog posts.
Content & Organization
- Content was cleaned, consolidated, and restructured to improve clarity and user experience.
- Removed or fixed hundreds of broken internal and external links.
- Consolidated duplicate posts and streamlined tags and categories.
- Organized webinars, reports, and resources with consistent formatting and accessible titles.
- Implemented auto-expiring events and a system for featuring recorded webinars as resources.
Visual Design & User Experience
- We designed a clean, modern interface that highlights SRP’s extensive library of research and advocacy work while making it easy for users to find what they need.
- Clear, intuitive navigation and filters for quick access to content.
- Consistent, readable layouts and strong visual hierarchy.
- Fully mobile-responsive and optimized for accessibility compliance (WCAG standards).
- Balanced professional branding with a welcoming, community-focused aesthetic.
Development & Implementation
- The new site was developed on WordPress using Beaver Builder for flexibility and control.
- Built on a secure, easy-to-update platform with no reliance on outdated modules.
- Implemented structured tagging to dynamically display related content and homepage features.
- Integrated PDF download tracking, SEO optimization, and analytics setup.
- Conducted accessibility and performance testing to ensure a high-quality launch.
- Delivered staff training and documentation for long-term content management.
Outcome
The new Safe Routes Partnership website:
- Eliminates security risks associated with the old Drupal platform.
